ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio held Central Michigan to 28.8 percent shooting in running away with its sixth straight Mid-American Conference victory, 68-42, on Saturday at The Convo.

The Chippewas (7-15, 2-7 MAC) connected on just 15 of 52 shots from the field, including 4 of 23 from 3-point range while committing 14 turnovers.

“The best thing that we did was we played pretty close to a 40-minute game,” Ohio coach John Groce said. “… I really appreciated our guys staying mentally tough in the first half when our shots weren’t falling.”

DeKALB, Ill. – Ohio opened the second half with a 12-1 run and pulled away from last-place Northern Illinois for its fifth straight victory, 67-58, before a crowd of just 784 people at The Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill., on Wednesday night.

Walter Offutt paced the Bobcats (18-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) with 19 points, making 9 of 9 free throws. Reggie Keely added 13 points and Nick Kellogg connected on 3 of 4 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio held on in the final minutes to complete a sweep of a four-game Mid-American Conference home stand with a 59-55 victory against Ball State on Saturday.

The Cardinals rallied from 12 down in the second half, tying the game on a Jarrod Jones free throw with 2:29 remaining, but Walter Offutt was big down the stretch.

Offutt finished with a team-high 13 points, with Ivo Baltic and Reggie Keely each adding 10 points.

Chris Bond had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Jones also posted a double-double with 11 points and 16 boards. Randy Davis knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio held a short-handed Western Michigan team to 30.2 percent shooting to take a 56-61 victory on Wednesday night at The Convo.

D.J. Cooper was the only Ohio player to score in double digits, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. The Bobcats (16-4, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) shot only 35.3 percent and committed 14 turnovers, but forced 17.

ATHENS, Ohio – Eighteen years after leaving Ohio University, Gary Trent returned Saturday and was honored by having his jersey retired before a sellout crowd of 13,011 at The Convo.

Known as the “Shaq of the MAC,” Trent is the only player ever to win the league Player of the Year honors three times, averaging 22.7 points and 11.3 rebounds in three seasons for the Bobcats.

His No. 20 jersey joined those of Frank Baumholtz, Walter Luckett, Dave Jamerson and coach Jim Snyder hanging in the rafters during a halftime ceremony.

Ivo Baltic had a game-high 20 points to lead the way, and Walter Offutt had a late steal and layup to give the Bobcats (15-4, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) the lead and then grabbed a key offensive rebound while finishing with 15 points. AKRON, Ohio – Akron shot 44 free throws, four Ohio players fouled out and the Zips pulled out a 68-63 victory against the Bobcats on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Seven-footer Zeke Marshall scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds as Ohio forwards Ivo Baltic, Reggie Keely and Jon Smith all were limited by fouls and all eventually were disqualified. Brett McClanahan and Nick Harney had 10 points apiece for the Zips (11-6, 3-0 Mid American Conference).

ATHENS, Ohio – After struggling defensively in back-to-back losses, Ohio stymied Buffalo, holding the Mid-American Conference’s top scoring team to 38 percent shooting in a 60-52 victory Wednesday night at The Convo.

The Bobcats continued to struggle offensively, shooting just 32.2 percent themselves, but they managed 10 more field goal tries and 10 more free throw attempts than the Bulls, thanks to a 23-15 turnover advantage and a 17-10 edge in offensive rebounds.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Ohio tied the game with two minutes left after trailing by 13 in the second half but Bowling Green made the final run to take a 67-57 victory in a Mid-American Conference opener at the Stroh Center on Saturday evening.

Bowling Green used a 9-0 run to go up 52-39 with less than eight minutes remaining, and after Walter Offutt tied the game on a putback, the Falcons closed out the game by scoring 10 of the final 11 points.

Jordon Crawford finished with 16 points to lead four Bowling Green players in double figures. Dee Brown had 13, A’uston Calhoun finished with 12 and Scott Thomas scored 10 for the Falcons, who shot 52.2 percent.

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio forced three of its Robert Morris’ 31 turnovers in the final minute, giving it a chance in the end, but the Bobcats missed a trio of 3-pointers that could have tied it in a 70-67 loss to Robert Morris at The Convo on Monday night.

Ohio (12-2) made just 3 of 26 3-point attempts on the night and lost to the Colonials for the third year in a row, failing to become the first Bobcats team ever to win 13 of their first 14 games.

“I thought their execution was better than ours,” Ohio coach John Groce said. “Having said that, I was really proud of our guys’ effort.”

ATHENS, Ohio – Walter Offutt led four Ohio players with 14 or more points by scoring 17 to lead Ohio to its ninth straight victory, 71-63, against Kennesaw State on Friday night at The Convo.

ATHENS, Ohio – Freshman Stevie Taylor scored a career-high 19 points and Ohio pulled away in the second half for an 82-66 victory against North Carolina A&T at The Convo on Friday night.

The Bobcats (11-1) led by just three at halftime but outscored the Aggies(4-10) by 13 points in the second half.

Walter Offutt and Nick Kellogg each scored 14 points, Ivo Baltic finished with 12 points and Reggie Keely netted 11 points.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Ohio led from start to finish, getting 22 points from Ivo Baltic in a dominating 76-59 victory against Northern Iowa at the McLeod Center.

The Bobcats (10-1) led 44-32 at halftime and had the game nearly put away midway through the second half with a 22-point advantage in a battle of RPI top-20 teams.

Ohio pulls away from Portland in second half


PORTLAND, Ore. – D.J. Cooper posted a triple-double and the Ohio men’s basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 72-54 victory against Portland at the Chiles Center on Saturday night.

ATHENS, Ohio – Walter Offutt’s three-point play with 1:25 left in overtime sparked a run of nine straight Bobcats points in an 85-78 victory Tuesday night at The Convo.

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio built a lead as big as 29 points in the second half and held off Tennessee-Martin down the stretch in a season-opening 74-65 victory at The Convo on Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats led 60-31 with 14:30 remaining on a Stevie Taylor 3-pointer, but the Skyhawks outscored them 34-14 the rest of the way to make it somewhat close down the stretch.

Nick Kellogg added 17 points and Ivo Baltic posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Bobcats add 3 players recently

One player each added for next 3 seasons


ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio basketball team has added three players in the last week.

The Bobcats reported have added center Kenny Belton as a walk-on to this fall’s roster and have received verbal commitments from shooting guard Caris LeVert in their 2012 recruiting class and center Anthony Allen in their 2013 class.

Belton, a former scholarship player at Cincinnati, has not played in more than three years because of a spinal injury.

He was last listed as 6-8 and 255 pounds, but his weight is now listed at 280 pounds on Ohio’s roster.

The native of Greensboro, N.C., played in 21 games as a freshman for the Bearcats during the 2007-08 season, averaging 1.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 6.7 minutes per game.

D.J. Cooper, who finished with 10 points and nine assists, scored the go-ahead layup with 1:30 remaining. Reggie Keely posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and in a balanced scoring effort, Ivo Baltic and Tommy Freeman added 10 and nine points, respectively.

Ohio to play Marshall in first round of CIT

Bobcats seek revenge for regular season defeat by Thundering Herd


Ohio has been selected to play in the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament, traveling to Marshall for a first round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

It is the Bobcats’ first ever selection to the CIT, and it gives them a chance to avenge a regular season loss to the Thundering Herd. Marshall defeated Ohio, 65-57, on Dec. 4.

Marshall (22-11) tied for fifth in Conference USA, losing in the tournament quarterfinals. Similarly, Ohio (18-15) was fifth in the Mid-American Conference and was defeated in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

The CIT features 12 first-round games at campus sites, with one game set for Monday, seven for Tuesday and four for Wednesday.

CLEVELAND – Ball state rallied from nine points down in the final two and a half minutes of regulation and took a 76-73 overtime victory against Ohio in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night.

D.J. Cooper hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to go with nine assists and eight rebounds as the Bobcats won their fifth in a row, pulling away late in the first half and continuing to hammer the Zips in the second half to sweep the season series.

KENT – DeVaughn Washington scored 20 points, including the game-winning runner in the lane with 15 seconds left as Ohio beat Kent State on the road for the first time in 10 years, 88-87, in overtime, on Saturday night at the MAC Center.

MUNCIE, Ind. – Nick Kellogg hit the go-ahead 3-pointer and came up with a key steal and layup as Ohio took a 61-60 victory against Ball State on Saturday at Worthen Arena.

D.J. Cooper missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final seconds, and Ohio dropped to 5-7 at home this season and below .500 overall after surrendering 18 offensive rebounds to Kent State.

AKRON – Ohio won for the first time in almost eight years at James A. Rhodes Arena, getting 23 points from freshman Nick Kellogg in a 79-70 victory against Akron on Wednesday night.

ATHENS, Ohio – An Orlando Williams 3-pointer with 29 seconds left in the third overtime proved to be the game-winner as Miami edged rival Ohio, 92-88, before 9,749 fans at The Convo on Sunday afternoon.

In a back-and-forth game with 12 lead changes, the Bobcats and RedHawks were even at the end of the first four periods, and a 50-32 rebounding disparity finally was too much for the Bobcats to overcome, even with turnovers in their favor, 20-11.
